  • Ledgestone and tile

Dry-stack and mortared finishes, pointed by hand

  • TV integration

Recessed boxes and conduit set before the stone

Planning

What drives the cost

The wall in front of you decides most of this. These are the choices that change the work behind the stone, and the number with it.

  1. 01

    Slab, tile or ledgestone

A single large-format slab needs templating, careful transport and lifting equipment. Tile and ledgestone cost less in material but take far more setting and pointing time on the wall.

  2. 02

    Bookmatching

Mirroring the veining across two or four slabs means buying sequential pieces, dry-laying them first and cutting to keep the pattern running. It is the most dramatic option and the most exacting.

  3. 03

    Height of the surround

Stopping at a mantel is a contained piece of work. Running to the ceiling means scaffolding, heavier support, more cuts around the ceiling line and no place for an error to hide.

  4. 04

    Floating hearth

A hearth with no visible support needs steel or a concealed bracket set into framing before the stone arrives. It is structural work done early, not a finish detail added at the end.

  5. 05

    Integrated TV and cable management

Recessing a TV and running power and HDMI behind the stone means coordinating with the electrician and setting the boxes before cladding. Retrofitting it afterwards is not realistic.

  6. 06

    Who supplies the insert

If a linear gas insert is part of the plan, supply, framing and the gas-fitter's connection affect both cost and schedule. Many clients buy their own insert and we build around it.

Questions

Common questions

Can a slab go over an existing brick fireplace?
Often yes. We check that the brick is sound and reasonably flat, then build a substrate over it so the stone has a true plane to sit on. If the brick is loose or badly out of plumb, removing it is the safer route and we will say so.
Can you hide the TV cables?
Yes, as long as we plan it before the wall is clad. We set recessed boxes and conduit for power and HDMI at framing stage, so the TV sits flush with nothing visible running down the stone.
Do you supply the fireplace insert?
We can, or you can buy your own and we build around it. Either way the insert needs to be chosen early because its frame dimensions and clearances drive the whole surround.

Ready to start your feature wall?

Send through the room, a few photos and your timing. Matteo reads every request himself and comes back with an itemised estimate.
