What drives the cost
A counter swap and a full kitchen are different projects. These are the decisions that move the number most, in plain terms.
- 01
Countertop material and edge
Quartz, granite and marble sit in different price bands, and the edge detail matters as much as the slab. A mitred waterfall end is several extra hours of fabrication and a precise seam; a standard eased edge is not.
- 02
Backsplash height
A four-inch return off the counter is quick. Tile to the underside of the cabinets is a full layout job around outlets and the hood, and a full slab backsplash means templating, cutting and lifting one large piece into place.
- 03
Cabinet scope
New doors and hardware on sound boxes is the cheapest route. Replacing the cabinets brings new templating for the counters; changing the layout brings plumbing, electrical and flooring along with it.
- 04
Appliance and plumbing moves
Sliding a sink, gas line or fridge water line across the room means opening walls or floor and coordinating trades. Keeping services where they are keeps the number down.
- 05
Flooring tie-in
If the old floor ran under the cabinets you will have gaps and height differences once they come out. Patching, levelling or replacing the whole floor is a decision that moves the total noticeably.
- 06
Electrical upgrades
Older kitchens often need added counter circuits, GFCI outlets, under-cabinet lighting or a hood vented to the exterior. These are code-driven items, not upgrades we invent.

Questions
Common questions
- Can you keep my cabinets and just do counters and backsplash?
- Yes, as long as the boxes are level, solid and can carry stone. We check them before templating, and if something needs shimming or reinforcing we tell you what it involves rather than building on a weak base.
- How long is the kitchen out of use?
- For counters and a backsplash, expect a few days without a sink between template, fabrication and install. A full kitchen is usually three to six weeks depending on cabinet lead times and how much plumbing and electrical work moves.
- Do you coordinate electrical and plumbing?
- Yes. We schedule the licensed trades, sequence them around tile and stone, and stay on site through the connections. You get one point of contact instead of chasing four numbers.
